Manchester United 5-2 Ipswich: Bruno Fernandes leads comeback as Red Devils secure first Premier League win

Manchester United needed a response. And they found one of the best possible answers.

On matchday two of the 2026/27 Premier League season, the Red Devils came from behind to beat Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford on Sunday. The result marked United’s first win of the campaign after their opening-day defeat to Hull City.

The star of the afternoon was Bruno Fernandes.

The captain scored three times — including from the penalty spot — and led Manchester United’s comeback in a dominant second half. Jacob Greaves, with an own goal, and Bryan Mbeumo completed the rout, while Leif Davis and Chuba Akpom scored for Ipswich.

But the scoreline does not tell the whole story.

For much of the first half, Ipswich were able to compete at Old Trafford and put United in an uncomfortable position. The game only truly changed after the break.

United had to survive first. Then they found Bruno Fernandes — and turned the game into a rout.

Manchester United started by trying to take control of the match.

In the seventh minute, Youri Tielemans received the ball from Marcus Rashford and tried his luck from outside the box, but his effort went over the bar.

Shortly after, Bryan Mbeumo was involved in a good move down the right. The Frenchman played the ball to Diogo Dalot, who cut inside and struck with his left foot. Kjell Scherpen was well positioned to make the save.

Ipswich, however, were not content to simply sit back.

In the 13th minute, Julio Enciso broke forward on the counter-attack and fired between United defenders. Senne Lammens made a good save.

The Belgian goalkeeper was called into action again in the 21st minute, when Daizen Maeda received the ball on the left and fired towards goal.

Ipswich were beginning to find spaces.

And in the 29th minute, they turned that good spell into a lead.

Abdul Fatawu Issahaku received the ball on the right, beat Luke Shaw and reached the byline before delivering a cross into the box.

Leif Davis arrived to finish first time.

Old Trafford was once again facing an uncomfortable situation.

After losing to another newly promoted side, Hull City, on the opening matchday, United were once again behind against a team that had just returned to the Premier League. The English press had highlighted exactly this risk before and during the match.

But Ipswich could not hold on to their lead.

In the 40th minute, Marcelino Núñez lost the ball under pressure from Matheus Cunha.

The Brazilian won it back and found Bruno Fernandes in behind.

The United captain drove forward and finished with his left foot.

It was the goal that brought the hosts back into the game — and the first sign of what was to come.

Half-time arrived with the scores level, but Ipswich had shown they could cause problems.

And the game was completely open.

Second half: Two minutes change everything

Manchester United came out for the second half with a different intensity.

In the 51st minute, a cross from the left found Bryan Mbeumo, who got his shot away and hit the crossbar.

It was a warning.

Five minutes later, the comeback was complete.

The ball fell to the edge of the box following a United attack. Harry Maguire won it back, drove forward and got his shot away.

The ball took a deflection off Jacob Greaves and ended up in the back of the net.

The goal was officially recorded as an own goal by Greaves.

And Ipswich barely had time to react.

In the 60th minute, Kobbie Mainoo found Matheus Cunha inside the box. The Brazilian forward got goal-side and was brought down by Greaves.

Bruno Fernandes took the ball.

Without hesitation, he sent Scherpen the wrong way and scored.

In just over ten minutes, the entire picture had changed.

Ipswich had taken the lead.

Now they were two goals behind.

That was the moment the game slipped away from the visitors.

In the 68th minute, the Portuguese midfielder struck again.

Marcus Rashford drove forward on the left and delivered a low cross. Ipswich's defense managed to partially clear it, but Mainoo tried his luck.

The ball deflected off the defense and fell to Bruno Fernandes, almost inside the six-yard box.

The captain controlled it and finished.

From there, Ipswich could no longer reproduce the football they had shown in the first half.

United found spaces.

Rashford continued to play an important role in the attacking moves.

Matheus Cunha provided movement up front.

Mbeumo attacked the spaces.

And Bruno Fernandes orchestrated everything.

In the 82nd minute, the fifth arrived.

Bruno found space and played a precise ball through to Bryan Mbeumo.

The forward drove forward and attempted to chip Scherpen as the goalkeeper came off his line.

The ball clipped the crossbar before going in.

Ipswich find another goal, but Scherpen prevents an even heavier defeat

Ipswich managed to pull another goal back in stoppage time.

In the 90+1st minute, Julio Enciso won the ball after a mistake from Lisandro Martínez and found Chuba Akpom inside the box.

The striker simply tapped into an empty net.

The goal, however, did not change the outcome.

In the final minutes, Scherpen still had to make another save to prevent United from extending their lead again.

The Dutch goalkeeper had a difficult afternoon, but he was important in preventing an even heavier scoreline.

The takeaway

For Manchester United, the result means much more than simply three points.

The defeat to Hull City on the opening day had put pressure on Michael Carrick and increased scrutiny on a team that needed to start the season differently.

Against Ipswich, the first half once again raised questions.

But the second half provided answers.

Five goals.

Three from Bruno Fernandes.

A comeback.

And the first three points of the season.

Bruno Fernandes was the standout performer, but the performance also highlighted the importance of Matheus Cunha in the attack. The Brazilian was directly involved in the equalizer and won the penalty that allowed United to take definitive control of the game.

Rashford also played an important role in building the attacks, while Mbeumo finished the afternoon with a goal and an assist for his captain.

The result does not erase the problems shown in the first half.

But it changes the mood.

Manchester United needed a response.

They found a rout.

For Ipswich, the assessment is naturally more complicated.

The team showed for 40 minutes that they can compete in the Premier League.

They created chances.

They applied pressure.

They took the lead at Old Trafford.

But they could not cope with their opponents’ response.

After the break, the team lost its compactness, conceded spaces and allowed four goals before scoring again in stoppage time.

Still, there are positives for Gary O’Neil to work with.

Ipswich returned to the Premier League determined to compete — and their first-half performance at Old Trafford showed that they have the ability to do so.

The challenge will be maintaining that level for the full 90 minutes.

Two games, one win and one defeat.

Manchester United still have plenty to improve.

But at Old Trafford, they found exactly what they needed:

a comeback, a rout and a decisive Bruno Fernandes.
