Europe's Interesting Transfer Windows: Seven Clubs Looking to Change Their Level in 2026/27

The transfer window is not over yet.

But with the new European season either just days away or already in its opening weeks, some clubs have already made it clear that they do not intend to follow the same path they did in 2025/26.

Some have rebuilt their squads.

Others have sold important players to make room for a new generation.

And there are also clubs that have gone into the market to address problems that became increasingly clear over the course of last season.

Tottenham, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Fiorentina, Arsenal, Liverpool and Aston Villa have all taken different approaches.

But they have one thing in common:

The decisions made during this window could have a major influence on their 2026/27 seasons.

The Offside has analysed seven European clubs whose transfer activity has been particularly interesting so far, looking not only at the players who have arrived and departed, but also at what those moves could mean on the pitch.

1. Tottenham: rebuilding after a season that left its mark

Few of Europe's biggest clubs had as many reasons to be active in the market as Tottenham.

Last season was far below expectations, with Spurs finding themselves dangerously close to the relegation battle.

The response came through the transfer market.

Roberto De Zerbi was brought in to try to keep the team in the Premier League last season, and it had already been decided that he would remain in charge of the long-term project regardless of whether the club stayed up or went down.

Tottenham have been one of the busiest clubs in the window, looking to improve the technical level of the squad while also bringing in players capable of changing the team's profile.

There could still be more arrivals. One of the potential targets is Savinho. The Brazilian right winger has already made it clear to Manchester City that he wants to leave in search of more minutes, while Tottenham continue to work towards an agreement with the Citizens.

More than simply accumulating new signings, Tottenham appear to have identified a clear need: to raise the team's competitive level.

Last season exposed problems with consistency, particularly when Spurs needed to control matches, deal with periods without the ball or find solutions against more compact opponents.

This summer's arrivals suggest an attempt to build a more versatile squad.

The question now will be whether the club can turn an abundance of individual talent into a functioning collective.

Because after what happened in 2025/26, Tottenham do not simply need to improve.

They need to restore their credibility.

2. Barcelona: major departures and an attempt to reshape the attack

Barcelona have had one of the most interesting transfer windows among Europe's biggest clubs.

And it begins with an important departure.

The sale of Ferran Torres to Paris Saint-Germain changed the attacking balance of the squad and created room for new pieces.

The club responded by going into the market.

Rodri.

Anthony Gordon.

Karim Adeyemi.

They are very different players, but each offers new possibilities for Barcelona's attacking system.

The most interesting aspect is the variety of profiles.

Adeyemi adds pace and depth.

Gordon brings intensity, ball-carrying ability and aggression when attacking space.

And Rodri represents a signing capable of raising the level of the team's overall play. He is one of the arrivals everyone is eager to see on the pitch — two styles that seem almost made for each other.

Barcelona appear to be trying to do more than simply replace the players who have left.

The idea seems to be to reshape the attack and expand the squad's range of possibilities.

The biggest question will be how all these pieces are organised.

Because attacking talent has never been the club's biggest problem.

And there is a feeling that one or two more names could still arrive.

Finding the right balance between creativity, intensity and control will be the real challenge.

3. Real Madrid: Mourinho gets new tools

Real Madrid are not a club that make small adjustments when they believe change is necessary.

Last season made that clear. The club finished without winning a single competition.

And the 2026 window reflects exactly how the team has responded to what happened last season.

Denzel Dumfries.

Ibrahima Konaté.

Bernardo Silva.

Diomandé.

Marc Cucurella.

And Endrick returning after his loan spell at Lyon.

They are additions that address different needs, but they also appear to fit directly into the type of football José Mourinho may want to implement.

Dumfries offers power and width down the flank.

Konaté adds pace, strength and the ability to defend large spaces.

Bernardo Silva brings technical control and experience.

Diomandé represents an investment for both the present and the future.

Marc Cucurella arrives after being one of the standout left-backs at the most recent World Cup.

Endrick also returns after a successful loan spell at Lyon. He had some inconsistent moments, but showed enough quality to suggest there is plenty to work with.

It will be interesting to see how Mourinho develops him.

And whether he will remain part of the squad, as Los Blancos have already indicated that they want to keep him despite continued interest from Premier League clubs.

The overall shape of the window suggests a Real Madrid side looking for different solutions within a squad that already possesses enormous individual talent.

Mourinho's arrival makes the project even more interesting.

He will have players capable of adapting to different contexts.

The team can defend deeper.

It can press high.

It can attack quickly in transition.

It can control possession.

The question will be which version we see most often.

But few teams appear to have given their manager as many new tools as Real Madrid.

4. Fiorentina: a strong response after a disappointing season

Fiorentina had clear reasons to act.

After a disastrous season that fell well below expectations, the club decided against making only minor adjustments.

The transfer window has been ambitious.

And some of the names brought in stand out not only because of their individual potential, but because of their ability to raise the technical level of the squad.

Oulaï is one of the symbols of this new Fiorentina.

The midfielder arrives after attracting attention with his performances and represents a significant investment.

Capable of playing in different areas of midfield, he offers mobility, quality in possession and the ability to contribute to the build-up.

Viery is a left-footed centre-back, physically very strong, and represents an interesting step up from Brazilian football to Serie A.

Arthur Atta and Giovanni Fabbian are also midfielders with enormous room for development, and both showed promising moments in Italian football last season.

Franco Mastantuono arrives on loan from Real Madrid in search of more minutes.

It will be interesting to see how he adapts to a league where tactical commitment is fundamental. His technical quality has already been evident. The question is how he will respond to the other demands of the game.

But the most important point goes beyond any individual player.

Fiorentina appear to have understood that they needed to raise the ceiling of the squad.

After a disappointing season, the objective now is to rebuild a team capable of competing for higher positions in Serie A and returning to European competition.

And among all the clubs on this list, perhaps none needs to turn a good transfer window into immediate results more than Fiorentina.

5. Arsenal: reinforcements to defend a title

Arsenal enter 2026/27 in a different position.

They are no longer trying to prove that they can compete.

Now they need to prove that they can stay at the top.

Defending a title is an entirely different challenge.

And the Gunners' transfer window appears to have been built with exactly that in mind.

The arrival of Bruno Guimarães adds experience, intensity and the ability to control different phases of the game.

Christos Tzolis offers another attacking option.

The club have also made Piero Hincapié's move permanent after his loan spell, with the defender proving important at several points last season.

Arsenal could still move for another defender following William Saliba's serious injury, with Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa currently appearing to be one of the names under consideration.

The squad appears to have been strengthened without abandoning the structure that brought Arsenal success.

The signing of Bruno is particularly interesting.

He can operate as a controlling midfielder.

He can contribute to the press.

He can speed up ball circulation.

And he also brings experience in high-level matches.

Tzolis, meanwhile, offers something different.

More mobility.

More aggression.

More ability to attack different areas of the pitch.

Arsenal do not appear to be trying to reinvent themselves.

They are trying to become better without abandoning what already works.

And for a champion, perhaps that is the most difficult — and the smartest — way to approach the market.

6. Liverpool: reinforcements for a squad that needed refreshing

Liverpool also used the transfer window to make important changes.

The arrivals of Víctor Muñoz, Jacquet and Ronald Araújo suggest a clear focus on the team's defensive structure and physical intensity.

Muñoz offers relentless intensity and the ability to cover the entire flank.

Araújo adds defensive aggression, pace and experience.

Jacquet represents an addition with the potential to develop within the club's structure.

The big question will be how Liverpool integrate these pieces without losing the mechanisms that are already part of the team's identity.

But there is a clear logic behind the moves.

The club appear to be building a squad better equipped to deal with different physical and defensive demands.

And in an increasingly intense Premier League, that could prove decisive.

7. Aston Villa: ambition to remain among the contenders

Aston Villa may be one of the most interesting projects on this list.

The club are no longer a surprise.

Now they need to prove that they can remain among the contenders.

And their transfer window reflects that ambition.

After losing important players, Villa returned to the market in search of players capable of sustaining a project that now carries much greater expectations.

Aston Villa's situation is particularly interesting because the club need to balance ambition with sustainability.

The squad have lost important players.

But they have also brought in new talent and could still remain active in the market.

Johan Manzambi, a young player with enormous potential for development, enjoyed a strong season at Freiburg and also impressed at the World Cup with Switzerland.

João Gomes is a Brazilian midfielder capable of covering a huge amount of ground. He is comfortable in short passing, excellent in tackles and interceptions, and still has room to improve.

It will be interesting to see João working under Unai Emery.

European football increases the number of matches.

The physical demands become greater.

And squad depth becomes even more important.

The challenge will not simply be to put together a strong starting XI.

It will be to build a group capable of competing on several fronts.

Emiliano "Dibu" Martínez appears likely to leave the club, while centre-back Ezri Konsa is reportedly attracting interest from Arsenal and could also be close to an exit.

After showing that they are capable of competing with some of Europe's biggest clubs, Aston Villa's next step will be to prove that this was not simply an isolated season.

The window is not over yet. And Villa could be one of the clubs with the most to gain — or lose — in the final days of the market.

The market is still open, but some ideas are already clear

The 2026 transfer window could still produce major changes.

Players could leave.

Others could arrive.

And some of the signings made so far will only truly be evaluated once the season gets underway.

But it is already possible to identify different strategies.

Tottenham are looking for a recovery.

Barcelona are trying to reshape their attack.

Real Madrid are giving Mourinho new weapons.

Fiorentina are attempting to respond to a disappointing season.

Arsenal are strengthening a title-winning side.

Liverpool are refreshing their structure.

And Aston Villa are trying to prove that they belong permanently among this group.

Transfers do not win matches on their own.

But they can change the way a team plays.

They can solve problems.

They can create new ones.

And in some cases, they can completely change a club's competitive ceiling.

The season is only just beginning.

But some of the biggest stories of 2026/27 may already have started to be written long before the first whistle.
